The development will serve as an anchor along Castle Lane and will rejuvenate Castle Arcade which has lately been neglected since the demise of BHS. The reinstatement of this route as one the last key historic entries within the city will serve as a catalyst for potential improvements to surrounding frontages along this street.

Forming one of the historic Belfast Entries, Castle Arcade provided access not only to the secondary entrance of the Gaumont Cinema, but also connected Castle Place directly to Castle Lane.

The former Classic/Gaumont Cinema exemplified an architecture which was expressive and opulent, rather than subversive, background or muted. It also realised an architectural ambition for the building which resonated with the genre of cinema and theatre buildings prevalent in the early to mid Twentieth Century.

The angular nature of the medieval map and the folded planes of the original arcade within Castle Buildings both serve as key references in considering how a faceted approach to addressing the Belfast Corner can be both contemporary and contextually relevant
