Planning

Planning submitted for former Queensway Stores, located at Queens Square, Crawley.

Queens Square occupies a prominent position within Crawley New Town and serves as a social hub and focal point to the main shopping district. Crawley’s old town also has a distinct architectural language that gives the area a unique character and has been our main influence in this design.

The project entails the renovation of an existing steel and glass department store built in the 1950s. New glazed ceramic rainscreen cladding draws reference from the New Town aesthetic of coloured ceramic tiles and mosaics and incorporates 19th-century timber shingle tile motifs from the old town. Whilst connecting the building with its eclectic past, the proposals project a bold and attractive architecture which will catalyse further investment within the town.

We have put together meaningful proposals with historical reference but distinct and project forward in making architecture which responds to the 21st century

Crawley’s New Town aesthetic incorporates a distinct and consistent artistic approach to the use of colour in creating streetscapes.

During the design development we became increasingly fascinated in the use of ceramic cladding and its extensive application in the immediate context - particularly with respect to the assertive use of colour and the opportunities ceramic cladding presented as a cladding material
